Looking around at the various supposed pictures of the Savior Yahushua that are extant today, and knowing that nobody really knows what He looks like, we begin to wonder how He may have actually looked when He was walking this earth in Human form. We also wonder why people are so dogmatic about having pictures that cannot even come close to resembling Him.
The "picture" of what He looked like has changed over the centuries too, from an early centuries Mediterranean look all the way up to a blonde-haired, blue-eyed modern man. There are even some people who think He was black with Negroid features. Of course, at this point in history we can not know what He looked like and it really does not matter anyway. What really matters is that He fulfilled scriptural prophecy and is the risen Son of the Living Eloah, Yahuwah. Therefore He is our Savior.
Some people will not like those statements, but truth is truth whether they like it or not.
Can we take a guess at what He looked like? Of course, as long as we don't try to make our choice the choice for everybody. But then if we get some idea of what He looks like into our heads, will we recognize Him when He returns if He does not look like our idea? Maybe it would be better if we just had an idea of the general way He may have looked, based on scripture, and let it go at that.
Scripture says that He was not very good to look at. As a matter of fact, YashaYahuw said this about Him: "Who has believed our report and to whom has the arm of Yahuwah been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness and when we see Him there is no beauty that we should desire Him." - YashaYahuw 53:1-2
From that passage we can gather that the pictures we see today cannot even be close to what He really looked like, for those pictures ARE comely and His looks in them are those of a movie star. What we see today is typically a lithe, long-haired, light-skinned and delicate-featured depiction of the Man YashaYahuw was talking about in his prophecy.
Remember that according to scripture He was physically of Ibriy stock and He would therefore have had dark olive skin, short curly hair, and a prominent nose. Anything else is far from scriptural truth.
So let us take a look at a few of the various pictures that have been circulating over the centuries and see if any of them can be close to what He may have looked like. The pictures are arranged from top to bottom, oldest to newest.
Since the Middle Ages cover such an expanse of years, all that can be said about the above picture is that it fell somewhere in that era. I would guess probably the High Middle Ages, but that is only a guess.
Early 20th Century
You can see how the pictures gradually came to resemble a European man more and more as time went by. That may be because the Roman Catholic Church, which is the source of most of these pictures, came to control more and more of Europe as time went by.
I don't see anything in any of the above pictures, with the exception of maybe the first one, that even remotely resembles a man of Ibriy descent. They all look very Western to me.
Below is the depiction from a forensic reconstruction of a skull that was found in the near vicinity of Yeruwshalom. The skull was dated to the first century CE and the reconstruction is probably pretty representative of what most men of that time and area looked like, minus their beards. Remember that this is probably NOT how Yahushua looked, but it is most likely a lot closer than the pictures we see above. It also fits YashaYahuw's prophecy reasonably well.
The pictures below are just foolishness, so far as I am concerned. It gives everybody a picture that they can identify with regardless of their ethnicity, although the one on the right does resemble a Mediterranean type. Ethnicity is not what scripture is about and neither is Yahushua. Ethnicity has nothing to do with salvation, only your heart. Repent therefore and be converted. Quit worrying about such foolishness and concentrate on obeying the word of Yahuwah. Then you will have something to identify with that really matters.
